Your resource for sewer back up

7/19/2022 (Permalink)

When your toilet overflows and you need to consult a professional call us to help at 660-240-5105.

There are three types of contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly degrade into category 2 or 3 water depending upon such factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Mold occurs in more places than you would think...

7/18/2022 (Permalink)

Mold grows most places When there is mold in the home an expert from SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond can assist in removing it properly.

Here are some interesting facts about mold: Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal,” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Common Health problems caused by Mold!

  • Chronic Sinus Problems
  • Nosebleeds
  • Hypersensitivity Pneumonia
  • Mold-Induced Asthma
  • Skin Infections
  • Neurological Problems

We here at SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond, want to take away your worries. If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property using our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to re-mediate your mold.

Don't wait! Call SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond today at 660-240-5105.

Odor and Smoke Damage

5/5/2022 (Permalink)

Home smoke damage Smoke damage caused by a home fire

Smoke and soot can be very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Chillicothe, Cameron, and Richmond will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect your property with care.

Health Concerns regarding the flu

5/5/2022 (Permalink)

Keeping well during flu season Tip and tricks for staying healthy

It is well known the best way to deal with the cold or flu is to not catch it in the first place.  Below is a list of SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond’s recommended steps to prevent illness.

  1. WASH YOUR HANDS: Common colds spread by direct contact. Avoid people with colds or flu like symptoms. Remember viruses can spread from hands to door handles, telephone, remotes, keyboards and can live for hours. It is important to wash your hands multiple times a day or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  2. GET MORE SLEEP: 7-8 hrs of restful sleep can be the difference between catching a serious illness or having the strength to fight it. Remember late night cell phone use needs to be limited and it is important to allow your mind time to unwind. It is wise to turn off your cell phone 2 hrs before bedtime.
  3. DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS: Avoid becoming dehydrated. A healthy adult needs at least 1.5 liters of water a day. Drinking water helps flush your system and will build a stronger immune system.
  4. EAT WELL: A diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help you avoid multiple health issues. Dark citrus fruits, dark blue and red berries, mangoes, apricots, carrots, and beetroot all support the immune system. Also, protein keeps the body strong and functioning at its best.
  5. AVOID SMOKING/ALCOHOL: Smoking cigarettes can damage the delicate tissues of the respiratory tract and make you susceptible to viruses. Consuming large amounts of alcohol is bad for immune cells. They become disorientated and confused, stunting reproduction.
  6. EXERCISE: Exercise helps to boost circulation which makes it easier for immune cells to get around the whole body, searching out viruses. It also stimulates the lymphatic system which helps to eliminate toxins and waste
  7. AVOID STRESS: It is well known that stress can weaken your immune system. Become aware of your emotional triggers and step away when needed. Your peace of mind is just as important as your physical health.
  8. GET PLENTY OF FRESH AIR: Avoid getting stuck in a room full of people with stale air. Find fresh air and breathe deeply. This helps the lymphatic system move protective immune cells around the body. Even though it's cold, try opening the window for a few minutes every hour for a blast of fresh air.
  9. STAY WARM: When you feel the onset of a cold make sure to keep your body heat regulated.
  10. USE A HEALTHCARE GRADE DISINFECTANT: We at SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond love our SERVPROXIDE. It is approved to clean all surface areas. Find a solution that works for you.

4/22/2022 (Permalink)

Do you know what the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality is? If you guessed the ventilation system then you guessed correctly. Make it a priority to inspect the duct-work of your home or business.

If your HVAC has been operating for some time without attention, it could be circulating odors, dust and other contaminates. Dust can cause more than just respiratory issues. Keeping the air ducts cleaned out and properly sanitized is a benefit to everyone who enters your home or business.

Safety first after a fire loss has occurred

4/22/2022 (Permalink)

If a fire loss has occurred and the fire department has extinguished the fire, here are a few important things to remember while on site.  SAFETY FIRST!

  1. Determine if the site is safe to continue to reside in. Is it safe and still protected from the elements?  In some cases this is an option. It may be best to find a safe place for your family/pets to stay during the repair/remediation process. Speak with your insurance regarding displacement assistance and see if it is available under your policy.
  2. Electrical and "slip and fall" hazards need to be addressed immediately. It is not simply fire damage that occurred - water from the fire department can cause almost as much damage as the fire did. Expect large puddles of water, soot, and debris.
  3. Determine what your immediate needs are and only do activities that are safe.  Don’t trust furniture/structures to be stable. Use caution! Wet materials can be very heavy, do not attempt to move anything without testing its weight.
  4. Be very careful walking on any flooring that received fire/water damage. DO NOT walk on affected floor joist and/or beams.
  5. Do not attempt to eat/drink anything from an open food container. Especially if it was near the source of the fire and water damage. Keep in mind heated plastic containers can release deadly toxins into water/soda under the right conditions.
  6. Don't attempt to wash the interior walls or clean carpet/upholstery without speaking to one of our cleaning specialists first. You may set the soot/smoke damage and limit the ability our ability to repair.
  7. Don't attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire without consulting an authorized repair service. Check with a specialist before assuming it is safe.
  8. Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. The wiring may be damaged. Better safe than sorry!
  9. Make sure and notify your electrical, gas, and water company of the loss.

Last but most important try to stay calm and call SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond at 660-240-5105, to evaluate and assist you further.  As scary as a fire can be, you should not face the situation alone. We are here as a resource for you!

Options for standing water in commercial or residential building

3/7/2022 (Permalink)

If you have standing water in your garage here are some options to consider…

Storm season may leave the parts of your commercial property vulnerable. If your structure's garage takes on flooding you may need special equipment and professional storm cleanup services to help. Here are three ways that you can remove standing water from your garage area.

1. Sump Pumps

Some basements are equipped with sump pumps to start extracting floodwater as soon as it becomes a problem. Some pumps are portable, allowing the cleanup crew to move them to the area that needs them the most. An industrial sump pump is designed to remove large volumes of water from the flooded to a container or outside location. It is an effective way to remove water quickly.

2. Trash Pumps

On occasion sump pumps can get clogged, so they're not the best solution when it comes to removing trash. If there is a lot of debris in the flooded area, a trash pump may be necessary. This piece of equipment can remove sludge as well as water.

3. Truck Mounts

In some cases you may be removing a large amount of water from your garage. The storm water will have to be moved relocated somewhere. If the flooding occurred as the result of a storm, the water is a Category 3 contaminant and thus must also be disposed of in a way that does not further contaminate the garage or some other area. Truck mounts siphon the water into a storage unit in a truck so that it can be transported easily to a disposal site. The sump pump or trash pump being used does the work on the scene while the truck mount directs the extracted substances into storage.

When storms flood the garage of your commercial building, don't just ignore it and hope the problem will dissipate. Taking action immediately to extract the contaminated water and debris with the right equipment and crew will aid in getting the space up and running faster. If you have questions reach out to your local SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond 660-240-5105.

Business owners and water loss

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Commercial Water Loss Commercial loss

Believe it or not, water from damaged pipes is one of the main causes of a business loss. If leaking pipes go undetected they can wreak havoc on a building's structure and eventually its contents. For this reason it is important to be prepared. Being proactive with coverage for your Missouri building is key in the event of a water loss. When shopping for a policy, look for the following types of coverage:

  • Sewer drain back up
  • Fire system malfunction
  • Flooding
  • Sudden water loss

The above are covered on some policies but excluded on others and it’s important to ask your agent to break down the difference. Both flood and sewer damage typically require you to have a rider for your insurance policy. Damage caused by sudden events is more commonly covered if it is a new loss but every policy is different. Coverage could go either way and your mitigation company will not be the one making that call. Like every type of insurance policy, there are exclusions and it’s important to know what the exclusions are especially for commercial property.

When you are shopping for a water damage policy, it is important that you read the fine print. Always keep communication open with your agent and allow them to explain whether damages are covered by your policy. A few common misconceptions occur with the following:

  • Damage caused by slow leaks
  • Leaks caused by freezing
    • Mold damage

Water damage is one of the most common losses business owners face, yet many owners are unprepared. This is typical because they do not read the fine print before purchasing a policy. If you want to ensure that you're covered for a water damage, whether it is caused by damaged pipes or flooding, discuss your unique exposures with your agent. Most agents are upfront about coverage and will help you to the best of their ability. SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond is your resource after a loss occurs. 1/25/2022 (Permalink)

Fire Pit Fire pit safety with family and friends

Outdoor fire pits are a fun pastime when the weather is cool.  It’s a great place to create lasting memories with family and friends. Make sure your fire pit time is the good type of memorable by following these safety tips.

  • Check the weather.  If winds greater than 15 MPH are in the forecast, do not ignite the fire pit at your gathering.
  • With weather permitting, make a fire pit and clear all brush from the area.  No structures within 25 feet of the fire pit should be present.
  • The safest way to start a fire is with small kindling.  If you must use charcoal lighter fluid, make sure to seal the container and keep it far away from the fire.  Never use lighter fluid once the fire has started.
  • The size of a recreational fire should be no more than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet high.
  • Keep a bucket of water and garden hose nearby.
  • Never use an accelerant such as gasoline, diesel fuel, or kerosene.
  • Do not spray aerosols or toss canisters or fireworks into the fire.
  • Keep a safe distance from the fire, and do not mess around the flame.
  • Avoid consuming alcohol near the fire pit or placing empty beverages in the pit when it is lit.
  • Make sure to put the fire out completely.  Stir the ashes and douse it thoroughly with water.

Most cities and townships do not allow open burning of garbage, automobile tires, papers, trash, leaves, foliage, clippings, brush, and trees and grass clippings.  Outdoor fireplaces and fire pits are permitted only when firewood is used for recreational purposes in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

In the event that you sustain damage from a fire pit mishap, please don’t hesitate to call SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond  for help at 660-240-5105.

Preparation is the greatest form of prevention...

12/1/2021 (Permalink)

With Winter fast approaching and overnight temps into the freezing areas it is important not to restrict the flow of water in your home. Leave faucets running and be sure to disconnect all exterior hoses from their bibs. SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond is always ready to handle any type of water damage or flood loss. Finding water in the home is an unfortunately a common occurrence, especially in the winder months but you can still take steps to try to avoid it. Here are some things you can do in Chillicothe Missouri to prevent broken pipes and other typical water damage issues.

Tips and Tricks To Prevent Plumbing Problems

Use this checklist to take preventative action in your home. Some of these suggestions are helpful habits to incorporate into your day-to-day life. Others only need to be done once or twice a year.

• Instead of pouring grease down the drain, pour it into a can or jar to either upcycle or dispose of when full.

• Don’t use chemicals to unclog drains. The same ingredients that help to eat away at your drain blockage can also chew through your pipes. Instead, use some type of drain snake or augur for your pipe cleanup.

• Look up at your ceilings and even go up to your attic. Look down at the floor near your water sources such as sinks, toilets, and bathtubs. Take note if any of these areas are prone to moisture or water in your home.

• Keep up with the maintenance for your major appliances such as sump pumps, dishwashers, washing machines, refrigerators, and water heaters. Slow leaks can sometimes do as much damage overall as a broken pipe.

• Pay attention to your average water bill. If it starts to climb or abruptly rises without reason, check for a leak. This is an easy way to be alerted to potential issues where you can take preemptive action prior to a full pipe cleanup.

What Now?

Even after preparing for water in home spaces, it is possible that something unforeseen can happen. When water damage happens, don’t fret. Consult your local SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond restoration specialists and refer to the tips and tricks checklist to see if there is further preparation that can be done to avoid future issues.

Sewer Cleanup & Restoration

9/7/2021 (Permalink)

Water from sewer system backups should be considered very dangerous. The water is grossly unsanitary and may contain bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illness. Special training and equipment is necessary to safely clean this type of contamination.

Sewage Backup or Toilet Overflow? Call Us Today – (660) 240-5105

There are three major types of contaminated water. SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond will inspect the contaminated water to determine the type of water and then plan the appropriate response to safely restore your home or business.

The three types of contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

This is water from a clean source, such as a broken clean water supply line or faucet. If left untreated, category 1 water can quickly morph into category 2 or 3 water depending upon such factors as time, temperature, and contact with contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can morph into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

This water has a significant level of contamination that could cause discomfort or illness if ingested. Sources for category 2 water may include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly morph into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

This water is grossly unsanitary and could cause severe illness or death if ingested, and any contact should be avoided. Sources for category 3 water could include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Preventative Maintenance:

Carpets act as a filter, trapping dust, dirt, gases, animal hair, and other soils. All carpet manufacturers agree on actions you can take between carpet cleanings to increase the life span of your carpet.

IICRC states that 79% of soil in carpet is dry soil. Vacuuming is a key component to proper care and maintenance of carpet.

Preventative maintenance actions include:

  • Regular vacuuming
  • Spot removal
  • Pilating the carpet to prevent matting
  • Moving furniture to change traffic patterns
  • Using walk-off mats to limit the amount of soil tracked onto the carpet

Professional Cleaning

Professional cleaning can address moderate and heavy soil conditions in your carpets. How often you’ll need professional cleaning depends on soil build-up, traffic, type and color of carpeting. A good rule of thumb would be to professionally clean your carpet every 12 months. The best advice is to clean carpets before they become totally saturated with soil. If you wait until carpets look really dirty, the carpets may never be restored to their former appearance. Dirt builds up in layers, and when a carpet looks dirty you are only seeing the dirt at the tips of the fibers. More dirt is hiding below the surface down near the base of the pile, causing damage to the carpet. When a carpet is saturated with dirt, the soil has penetrated crevices and has become firmly lodged.

What color is mold?

4/13/2021 (Permalink)

Many people ask the question: IS Black Mold Really Black?

If you come across blackish looking mold in your Missouri home, there is a chance it could be "Black Mold." The Latin official name for this organism is Stachybotrys chartarum; if you can pronounce that, you already know more about it than most individuals.

There are many thousands of mold species known, and the list only grows longer with each passing year. Black mold specifically is one of about a dozen that is commonly found within structural environments. The colors vary and do not hint at levels of toxicity or health effects. Most are harmless, posing very low threat to people.

Another common question is: Should you believe what you read about black mold?

We suggest the saying about the internet--"I read it there, so it must be true," is of course often fallacious. There is no need to panic or feel uncomfortable upon discovering a mold stain in your Missouri bathroom or basement. Speak to a reparable firm about your concerns.

Our Advice to You

  • Call SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond for a visual inspection of your home
    • Visible mold can be sent for testing
    • Air samples can also be sent to a third-party laboratory for spore identification and volume
    • Testing is a personal decision, though we find little merit in testing. If you see mold, you have mold. Remediation is the answer.
    • Store-bought testing kits are not a good idea, they are inaccurate, and the treatments remain the same
    • Call SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond first at 660-240-5105.

Leading restoration technology and techniques

4/13/2021 (Permalink)

The past few decades have seen a rapid advancement in the technology and techniques used in the restoration industry. These advancements allow SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond Franchise Professionals to restore a property back to preloss condition quickly, reliably, and more effectively.

The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) sets practical standards for restoration and cleaning. The IICRC S500 Water Damage Guide is a specific set of practical standards that incorporate the field of psychometry, which involves the manipulation of temperature and relative humidity to remove moisture and dry a property quickly and effectively.

Moisture Detection and Measurement Equipment

Scientific drying principles rely upon specialized equipment to detect, measure, and monitor a property’s moisture levels. Recent advances, like infrared cameras, can help us detect water through a wall, ceiling, or floor.

  • An infrared camera may be used to identify water location for thorough water removal.
  • Sensitive moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other meters measure the extent of moisture saturation

Water Extraction Equipment

Powerful extraction equipment speeds the drying process by removing the bulk of the water from your home or business.

  • Submersible and gas-powered pumps for continuous pumping of high-level water.
  • Truck-mounted and portable extraction units perform efficient water removal.

Drying Equipment

Industrial strength air movers and dehumidifiers are needed to remove the remaining moisture from ceiling, walls, and floors of your home or business. Proper drying helps to prevent swelling and warping of floors, walls, and furniture.

  • High-speed air movers causes moisture to evaporate at a faster pace
  • Industrial grade dehumidifiers pull the water vapor from the air.

SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond has the knowledge and training to help get the job done correctly. Reach out with any questions at 660- 240-5105. We are always here to help!

Post Storm Microbial Growth

4/6/2021 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores exist almost everywhere, outdoors and indoors, making it almost impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal,” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or on a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. Often times after a storm or water loss.

Reach out to SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond at 816-240-5105 today if you feel you may have a mold issue that needs immediate attention.

Regardless of the season Storms can hit

4/5/2021 (Permalink)

Winter storms sweep across the country, knocking out power for millions of people as it dumped snow and ice in places where such perilously frigid conditions tend to arrive just once in a generation. Officials in several states urged residents to stay home, avoiding highways and roads that have become treacherous. Cars and trucks were seen skidding into one another and off the pavement entirely, prompting local law enforcement to respond to hundreds of calls at a time. In total, roughly 150 million Americans were under some form of winter storm warning over the last few weeks. Snow coated the sand on the Gulf Coast beaches, and enough had fallen in Texas for people to go sledding. In fact, at one point, it was colder in some parts of West Texas than it was in Alaska! Sustaining storm damage to your home or commercial business can be a complicated endeavor. Not only is structural damage a possibility, but water and electrical damage are too. Working with the right cleanup and restoration company can make all the difference in your recovery process. Prepare for a loss with your pets in mind

4/5/2021 (Permalink)

Pets are just as important as any family member to most people, so why would you not make them a part of your preparedness planning? There are several things you can do to make sure they stay safe during an emergency. Pet Emergency Kit Ready.gov/animals lists the below items as essential to building your Pet Emergency Kit. Food: At least a three day supply in an airtight, waterproof container. Water: At least three days of water specifically for your pets. Medicines and medical records. Important documents. Registration information, adoption papers and vaccination documents. Talk to your veterinarian about microchipping and enrolling your pet in a recovery database. First aid kit: Cotton bandage rolls, bandage tape and scissors; antibiotic ointment; flea and tick prevention; latex gloves, isopropyl alcohol and saline solution. Including a pet first aid reference book is a good idea too. Collar or harness with ID tag, rabies tag and a leash. Crate or pet carrier. Have a sturdy, safe crate or carrier in case you need to evacuate. The carrier should be large enough for your pet to stand, turn around and lie down.  Pet litter and litter box if appropriate: newspapers, paper towels, plastic trash bags and household supplies. A picture of you and your pet together. If you become separated, a picture of you and your pet together will help you document ownership and allow others to assist you. Add species, breed, age, sex, color and distinguishing characteristics. Familiar items. Familiar items, such as treats, toys and bedding can help reduce stress for your pet. Evacuations While practicing fire escape or evacuation plans, be sure to include pets. If an evacuation happens, don’t leave pets behind as they can be lost or injured. Identification Microchipping pets is a great way to locate them. Most veterinary clinics and shelters have scanners that will read the microchip information to help find a pet’s owners. Be sure to take four-legged friends into consideration when planning for emergencies. Visit ready.gov/ animals for further tips and safety precautions to think about. If you have further questions feel free to reach out to SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond at 660.240.5105.

Cooking equipment is the leading cause for residential fires.

4/5/2021 (Permalink)

Did you know cooking equipment is the leading cause of residential fires? As the holiday wraps up and we roll into Summer you may find yourself in the kitchen more often while hosting friends and family. Fire precautions should be top of mind. A property owner experiences a flood of emotions when a fire ravages their business or home. Fear, uncertainty, stress, and doubt about the future of the property and their livelihood can be overwhelming to the property owner long after the flames have been extinguished and the smoke has cleared. After the first wave of heroes have rescued the property, let your local SERVPRO® of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond franchise professionals help you restore it to its preloss condition. Combining rapid response, the utmost professionalism, and open communication throughout the entire job process, we strive to restore not only the home or business structure, but the customer’s peace of mind. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) offers the following eye-opening statistics on structure fires: more than one-quarter (27%) of reported fires occurred in homes within the last year. Even worse, 79% of fire-related deaths were caused by home fires. On average, U.S. fire departments respond to an estimated average of 354,400 home structure fires per year resulting in $6.9 billion in direct property damage. Most home fires and fire casualties result from five causes: cooking, heating, electrical distribution and lighting equipment, intentional fire setting, and smoking materials. If the unthinkable happens and a fire strikes your home or business, give the experts at your local SERVPRO® of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond franchise a call. We will help make it “Like it never even happened.”

National Volunteer Month

National Volunteer Week is April 18-24, 2021. The theme is: The Value of One, The Power of Many, which reflects on the awe-inspiring acts of kindness by millions of individuals and the magic that happens when we work together towards a common purpose. This past year, we have seen people supporting family, friends, neighbors, and strangers, people standing up for their beliefs, and people sharing insights on how to create a more just and equitable society. "We recognize the value of the caring and compassion that each one has shown another, and we recognize the power of people, organizations, and sectors working together," according to The International Year of Volunteers. The 2021 theme beautifully reflects the individual and collective efforts we have seen during the pandemic, and it sets the tone for re-imagining the next 20 years as the value of one act and the power of many enables us to thrive together.

Steps to take after a Fire Loss

3/31/2021 (Permalink)

After a fire loss occurs and the local fire department has extinguished the fire, here are a few important things to remember.  KEEP SAFETY FIRST!

  1. We need to determine if the site is safe to continue to reside in. Is it safe and still protected from the elements?  Very rarely is that and option. It may be best to find a safe place for your family/pets to stay during the repair/remediation process. Speak with your insurance regarding displacement assistance and see if it is available under your policy.
  2. Check Electrical and "slip and fall" hazards need to be addressed immediately. It is not simply a fire damage that occurred - water from the fire department can cause almost as much damage as the fire did. Large puddles of water, soot, and debris are expected.
  3. It is important to determine what your immediate needs are and only do activities that are safe.
It's always safe than sorry!
  9. Make sure and notify your electrical, gas, and water company of the loss.
  10. Try to stay calm and call SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond (660) 240-5105 to evaluate and assist your damage further.  As scary as a fire can be, you don't have to face the situation alone. We are here to help!

Declutter your work space

2/8/2021 (Permalink)

A clean environment is a healthy environment. Improve your living and workspaces this spring. Here are a few tips and tricks to help you declutter your office.  Divide your workspace into zones. Determine how you want and need to use the space and set up zones for your daily functions. This will provide a foundation for a more efficient use of space. Keep only what you need at arm's length. Boxes of pens, stacks of papers and old coffee cups need to go. Rid your desk of visual clutter.  Create a daily system for organization. Consider creating hanging files or baskets.  Sort through your catch-all "junk" drawer. Go through your drawers every six weeks and clear out anything that is out of place or isn't being used.  Eliminate digital clutter by organizing your work inbox. Keep icons on your desktop to a minimum. If you need a little help, don't worry, your local SERVPRO® franchise professionals have the tools to make your home or business sparkle in no time. Contact us today at 660-240-5105.

Holiday Safety Tips

Holiday Parties - Image of room with Christmas decorations Keep your place of business safe this holiday season

Pretty lights, candles and decorations are just a few of the items bringing charm and cheer to the holiday season. However, if they are not used carefully your holidays may go from festive to frightening. The American Red Cross offers the following safety tips to help greatly reduce the fire risk in your home or business this holiday season.  Place Christmas trees, candles and other holiday decorations at least three feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, portable heaters, radiators, heat vents, and candles. Make sure light strings and other holiday decorations are in good condition. Do not use anything with frayed electrical cords and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Always unplug tree and holiday lights before leaving the property or going to bed. Never use lit candles to decorate a tree. Always extinguish candles before leaving the room or before going to bed. Use only sturdy tree stands designed to not tip over. Keep curious pets and children away from Christmas trees.  Keep anything that can catch on fire—like pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels or curtains—away from your stove top.  Designate one person to walk around your property to ensure all candles and smoking materials are properly extinguished after guests leave. Your local SERVPRO® of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond franchise professionals wish you a safe and happy holiday season.

ARE YOU WINTER WEATHER READY?

12/3/2020 (Permalink)

Ready for winter weather - image of snowflakes Make sure you are ready for winter weather

Are you prepared for the upcoming cold weather? Cold weather can have a huge impact on your home or business if you are not ready for it. From heavy rain and freezing temperatures to damaging winds, sleet, or snow, all can cause serious and costly property damage. While you cannot control the weather, you can take steps to be prepared and help take the sting out of winter weather. To help prevent costly damages due to weather, consider taking the following precautions to protect your property before colder weather hits.  Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Wind, heavy rain, ice and snow can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries. Roofs, water pipes and gutters should all be inspected to help ensure they are in proper order. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building. Clear gutters of debris that may have gathered during the fall. Leaves and other obstructions can cause a damming effect, which can lead to roof damage and interior water problems.  Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate a potential flood hazard. Inspect all handrails, stairwells and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.  Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open, allowing warm inside air to circulate around the pipes. If the building has outdoor faucets, consider shutting water off at the main valve in the basement or crawl space. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, preventing any remaining water from freezing in the pipe. Ask your local SERVPRO® of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond professionals about completing an Emergency READY Profile® (ERP) for your business. The ERP is a no cost assessment of your facility and provides you with a plan to get back in business faster following a disaster. Preparation is the key to making it through any size disaster, whether it is a small water leak, a large fire or an area flood. The best time to plan for such events is not when the event happens, but well beforehand. No one ever plans on a disaster, but now, you can plan and prepare for it. When winter weather strikes, call your local SERVPRO® of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond professionals to strike back and help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Fireplace Safety Fire Safety tips this Holiday Season

“Chestnuts roasting on an open fire!”

It’s important to keep yourself and your family safe by practicing fire safety. It’s the holiday season, and nothing compares to relaxing in front of a fireplace with a cup of cocoa and a Christmas movie playing in the background.

To do this it is crucial to remember that for fireplaces and woodstoves you should always:

  • Make sure the fire is completely out before leaving the house or going to bed.
  • Inspect and clean wood stove pipes and chimneys annually and check monthly for damage or obstructions.
  • Use a fireplace screen heavy enough to stop rolling logs and big enough to cover the entire opening of the fireplace to catch flying sparks.

There are precautions you can take for portable space heaters as well, including:

  • Never use an extension cord for portable space heaters.
  • Keep combustible objects at least three feet away from portable heating devices.
  • Buy only heaters evaluated by a nationally recognized laboratory.
  • Check to make the portable heater has a thermostat control mechanism, and will switch off automatically if the heater falls over.
  • Only use crystal clear K-1 kerosene in kerosene heaters. Never overfill it. Use the heater in a well-ventilated room.

These simple actions can help keep this Christmas Merry and Bright. Let’s leave the roasting to the chestnuts!

SERVPRO® of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday season and a very Happy New Year!

Sanitizing vs. Disinfecting

4/6/2020 (Permalink)

As defined under the IDENTIFICATION OF ESSENTIAL CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE WORKERS DURING COVID-19 RESPONSE SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond is equippedtrained and ready to help you with your cleanup needs.

We want you to know that you are not alone and We Are All in This Together!

SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond CAN preform:

  1. Proactive Cleaning:  fogging and wiping down common touch areas
  2. Suspected or confirmed cases:  fogging and detail clean

Sanitizing versus Disinfecting

Sanitizing – Clean low-risk surfaces, such as floors, windows, etc., where the likelihood of pathogen transfer from the surface is low. Sanitizing should only be applied to food contact surfaces, which is required as part of the food code. Disinfection is appropriate for frequently touched surfaces and surfaces likely to harbor pathogens. Since sanitizing does not make anti-viral claims, sanitizing offers no confidence of killing the flu or other viruses commonly found on surfaces. — Peter Teska, Americas portfolio lead for infection prevention, Diversey, Sturtevant, Wis. Sanitizing is better than cleaning alone but the reduction of pathogen populations on environmental surfaces is exponentially better when you disinfect.

Disinfecting – Disinfecting is for the big messes, particularly those involving bodily fluids, blood, and virus contamination. Disinfecting a surface will “kill” the microscopic organisms as claimed on the label of a particular product. This works by using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. Disinfecting destroys or irreversibly inactivates infectious or other undesirable microbes. But not necessarily the spores of bacteria or fungi. The number of microbes killed during a disinfecting process will vary, depending on the specific chemical and how it is used. SERVPRO Industries, LLC has been dealing with biological hazards such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi for over 50 years.

Now is an opportune time to have SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond conduct Proactive Cleaning services while facilities are unoccupied. This scenario allows our production technicians to efficiently and effectively; build DE containment areas, gear up with appropriate PPE, and do what we do best – CLEAN & Disinfect!

The virus known as “coronavirus disease 2019” (abbreviated “COVID-19”)iii is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person or through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

What You Should Know: 2019-nCoV, A New Coronavirus

With concerns rising among the US regarding the possible spread of 2019 Coronavirus, we thought we should take a few moments to discuss what the CDC has stated to the public.  Please read the following excerpt from the CDC website.

“Much is unknown about how 2019-nCoV, a new coronavirus, spreads. Current knowledge is largely based on what is known about similar coronaviruses. Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that are common in many different species of animals, including camels, cattle, cats, and bats. Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people and then spread between people such as with MERSSARS, and now with 2019-nCoV.

Most often, spread from person-to-person happens among close contacts (about 6 feet). Person-to-person spread is thought to occur mainly via respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes, similar to how influenza and other respiratory pathogens spread. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. It’s currently unclear if a person can get 2019-nCoV by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes.

Typically, with most respiratory viruses, people are thought to be most contagious when they are most symptomatic (the sickest).

It’s important to note that how easily a virus spreads person-to-person can vary. Some viruses are highly contagious (like measles), while other viruses are less so. There is much more to learn about the transmissibility, severity, and other features associated with 2019-nCoV and investigations are ongoing.”

It is clear from the statement above, the CDC has not verified how this particular strand is spread to the public. All possible cases/exposure are currently handled with extreme caution and a 14-day quarantine in order to minimize contamination. As the CDC continues to handle the progression of the 2019-nCoV, we as the public can help by practicing awareness and prevention techniques.

We at SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond care about what matters most in your life.  Remember:

Safety Tips to help prevent a Fire Loss this Holiday Season

10/22/2019 (Permalink)

The holiday season is just around the corner. Thanksgiving wouldn't be complete without a large family dinner.  It is very easy to put safety on the "back burner" when we are busy visiting, we just wish to share a few friendly reminders to stay safe.

Safety Reminders:

1. Turn all lights off when unattended.

2. Keep lit candles away from decorations and other things that can burn. Some lights are only for indoor or outdoor use, but not both.

3. Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. Read manufacturer’s instructions for number of light strands to connect.

4. Use clips, not nails, to hang lights so the cords do not get damaged.

5. Keep decorations away from windows and doors.

6. Stay in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop.

7. Don't overfill pots and pans with grease and oil.

8. Test your smoke alarms and tell guests about your home fire escape plan.

9. Don't use metal in the microwave.

10. Remember to UNTHAW your turkey prior to deep-frying it.

Here at SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond we know how devastating a fire can be to your home and family and we truly care about your wellbeing. Should the need arise we are only a phone call away at (660) 240-5105.

Frozen Pipes are a concern in freezing temps: see important tips for prevention

1/21/2019 (Permalink)

Frozen Pipe Frozen Pipe during water loss

Northwest Missouri is no stranger to both single digit and subzero temperatures. Our friends over at consumerreports.org have put together a helpful guide to help prevent burst pipes this winter. Prevention is key however, if you are unable to prevent a burst pipe, remember that SERVPRO of Chillicothe/Cameron/Richmond is "Here To Help"!

How to Beat the Freeze

Once the temperature starts dropping outside, you should take measures inside to keep your pipes warm and water running. Research conducted by the Building Research Council at the University of Illinois shows that the “temperature alert threshold” is 20° F, especially if you have uninsulated pipes running through an uninsulated space.

Some of the steps experts recommend may go against your better instincts of conserving water and heat, but the extra expense is nothing compared with a hefty repair bill. Here’s what to do:

Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing, especially if your sinks are on an exterior wall. (If you have small children, be sure to remove any harmful cleaners and household chemicals.)

Let the cold water drip from a faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe—even at a trickle—helps prevent pipes from freezing.

Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature during day and night. Again, during a cold snap is not the time to set back the thermostat at night to save a few bucks on your heating bill.

If you plan to be away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.

For the long term, add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in those areas. And to prevent drafts, seal cracks and openings around windows, doors, and at sill plates, where the house rests on its foundation.

How to Thaw Frozen Pipes

If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, you may well have a frozen pipe. “If you suspect the pipes are frozen, be careful when thawing them out because if the pipe has already burst, the water will come flowing out and flood your home,” says John Galeotafiore, who oversees Consumer Reports’ testing of home products and power gear.

If a pipe has broken, turn off the water at the main shutoff valve, which is usually at the water meter or where the main line enters the house. If the water is still running and no pipes have burst, you can take the following steps. (Of course, if you suspect a more serious problem, call a plumber.)

Turn on the faucet. As you heat the frozen pipe and the ice plug begins to melt, you want the water to be able to flow through. Running water through the pipe, as cold as it is, will help melt ice in the pipe.

Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, or a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. As tempting as it may be, do not use a blowtorch, a kerosene or propane heater, a charcoal stove, or any device with an open flame; the high heat can damage the pipes or even start a fire.

Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. Check all other faucets in your home to see whether you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze, too.

Call a licensed plumber if you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you cannot thaw the pipe.\
